Despite the fact that the built in speakers of modern day televisions have improved dramatically, you cannot better a television that has it’s own independent speaker system. Not every show you watch will require this type of sound enhancement but modern films, games and music rely heavily on their complex sound tracks and this it where you will benefit. Even if you buy a really expensive TV, you won’t get the same sort of sound quality possible with the speaker systems available now. Marketers are very good at convincing us to buy HD Television sets as the next generation of home viewing pleasure but most people purchase them after they have seen them working outside of a store environment - like at their friends house for example.

The two things to consider before you buy a HD television set are to be sure of your expectations and your budget. In case you already own surround sound speakers or thinking of buying them, remember 10 percent of the total TV cost would be spent on cabling the speakers. You will most likely need an amp, or av receiver also to control the external speakers. Though this topic demands another chapter, but this is an additional cost, which can run from several hundreds to thousands.

Speakers generally come in several forms, although there are many factors of them, you are typically looking at a ratio of 5. The speaker system has one speaker at the center followed by one left and one right surround speakers which are placed at the far front corners from the seat, and two rear speakers one right and one left. While each of these are independent but their positioning have to done in such a way that the seating place is in the center. Most AV receivers / amps can be configured however to control the volume they output at to offset the speaker location accordingly.

The basic function of a sub-woofer is to give the movie sound a real-life feel so having one would improve your overall movie viewing experience. It can give sound a completely real life feel, which is available only in theater halls. Moreover the deep bass frequencies, which you hear from sub woofers, are practically from all sides as they are at the level or below human hearing levels. It is very difficult for our ears to actually pin-point the direction in which the sound is coming and that is why we can only sense that an earthquake seems to be all around us, rather from coming from a particular direction.

While the position of the sub woofer is just about anywhere in the room but to get optimum output, you have to consider the size of the room, the type of flooring it has, the furnishing fabrics and the construction of the wall. Usually the perfect placement of the sub woofer is in the front portion of the room, to the right of left of the main speakers. Speaker sets can be picked up relatively cheaply, and of course, second hand. There are many systems available and it will depend on your budget in the end but look out for a set of Canton movie CD-1 (now referred to as CD-101) which offer excellent value for money.
